The Final Post

Over the past 8/9 weeks I have been attempting to stay off of social media. My goal was to do this and see how my focus and mental health were at the end of my time off of social media. In the end I made it so that my goal would be to stay off of social media on my phone.   It has definitely been an up and down process. At times it went really well and others not at all. At the start I tired to replace social media by doing burpees, pushups or sit ups each time I felt like looking at my phone. This only worked for a while as if I was out for a walk or not at home it became hard to do pushups, sit-ups or burpees in a random public place.  My real challenge came when I realized that one of the sports I follow only posts its news and information on social media sources this meant in order for me to follow what was happening in the semifinals I had to go on social media so the challenge was scraped around the 6th/7th week.  I would like to try this again for the mo...

Week 6

This week has been much better. I have been leaving my phone and going outside a lot more. I think it is helping a lot that the weather is nice and time on the computer is much less then in previous weeks. Over the past week I have been doing a lot of walking/hiking with Julia and Carwyn on the York Region Forest Trails. We even got a chance to go canoeing one day.  I have noticed that the more time I am out in a quiet place that calmer and clear my brain is. I am going to try and add more of these hikes as I move forward into the last few weeks of our passion project.

Week 4 and 5

I decided to do this post for two weeks for a couple of reasons. 1. The last two weeks have been a bit of a burr with report card writing and 2 I forgot to do a post on week 5. Needles to say being on the computer a lot and checking in on how hockey has been going for the leafs (Not Well) has lead me to be distracted by Social Media A LOT! My hope is now that the leafs are out of the playoffs again is that I will have less of a reason to check what is going on on my phone.

Week 3: Getting Better

This week got better for me, each time I went to use Social Media, I did something instead like pushups, rowing or another exercise. By the end of the week I noticed that my head felt clearer and that I wasn't looking for my Phone as much. This was a pretty great feeling.  One of the main things I was doing was rowing on my indoor rower. I found that in about 30 min of rowing I was going about 7km each time. This is a great change from spending 30 min on social media.

How Was Week 1 and Week 2

Week one I did really well. I only went on social media on Saturday and stayed of it for the rest of the week. I felt a lot clearer in my head and was more present with my family and around my house. I actually found it was a lot more fun to do things around my house like chores etc. and that I got a lot more done.  The second week did not go as well. When I got back on social media I spent a lot of time there and found it really hard to shake after that. I was on it a lot this second week and kept going back to check it.  My plan moving forward is to put my phone places where I can not access it easily to see if I can go back to what I was like the first week. If this does not work my next step will be to delete my social media apps. Wish me luck!

Starting My Journey

Image
Hello anyone who is reading this Blog. My name is Gareth Hussey. Mr. Hussey to my grade 7 students. This is the year of 2021 and we are at home and learning online. One of the things I have challenged my students to do is something for themselves.  I to am going to try something new for myself. For the next ten weeks I am going to try and limit my social media use to one day a week. Right now because I am stuck at home most days my go to has been to check social media whenever I have a break or am board. This becomes quiet a lot each day.  My plan is to every time I want to check my phone do an exercise or stretch instead as this will give my Brain the same type of endorphins and positive feel that checking my phone does. My hope is this will get me off my phone and help get me into better shape ha ha. Wish me luck!
